Sculpture Walk

“Katrina” By: Osamede Obazze
1.)  Wind, Chaos, Tragedy, Fear, and Broken.
2.)  What I like about this sculpture is the emotion portrayed in the woman’s face. The expression on her face makes you almost feel the pain and hurt with her. I also like how the umbrella is able to move just slightly in the wind. It gives the sculpture a realistic feel.
3.)  What I dislike about this sculpture is her hair. It is really spiky and ugly. It almost gives the woman a creepy look. I also don’t like how there are pieces missing in her legs. It is really unattractive.
4.)  I personally would not purchase this sculpture. I would not purchase it because I find it depressing. I would rather purchase a sculpture that gives me a happy feeling every time I look at it rather than a sad feeling.
5.)  The sculpture represents the hard times of the devastating storm, hurricane Katrina. It shows how the storm took everything from the victims by how the artist made the sculpture broken. The sculpture helps the viewer understand how awful the storm was and how it affected the victims lives.
6.)  The sculpture does have a strong frontal presentation, but the front is not the only strong feature. Her body is bent in all different kinds of ways making it visually interesting. The natural lighting doesn’t really enhance the sculpture in my opinion. The sculpture looks like it was out of scraps of metal.
7.)  The sculpture is very angular. Her body is bent in all different ways. One arm is down and one arm is up holding onto the umbrella. Her legs are bent and awkward giving the sculpture an abstract look. It is very detailed  and enhanced by texture.

“Aplomb” By: Luke Achterberg
1.)  Twisted, Bright, Smooth, Pointed, and Confusing.
2.)  I like that this sculpture is bright. The colors are my old high school colors, which gives me a feeling of pride. I also like that the sculpture is twisted in all different ways.
3.)  I do not like that the sculpture portrays no emotion. In my opinion, it has no meaning, no purpose. It is just a whole bunch of twisted metal.
4.)  I would purchase this sculpture. I like that the colors are bright and friendly. It is a cool piece of art even though it has no meaning.
5.)  Maybe the sculpture represents life. It is twisted in all different sorts of ways kind of like life. You never know where your life is going to go or end up. This sculpture is random and confusing, just like life can be at points.
6.)  This sculpture is interesting from all sides and angles. It is not a sculpture that you just look at from the front or back. You have to walk around to take it all in. The natural lighting enhances the sculpture because the colors are so bright.
7.)  The sculpture is angular. It is pretty simplified, there is no detail on the sculpture. It is smooth and is very abstracted.

“Comedy/Tragedy” By: Ben Hammond

1.)  Hands, Drama, Scary, Creative, and Emotion.
2.)  What I like about the sculpture is the hands. They really stick out to me. I also like the colors used in the face. It gives the sculpture more emotion.
3.)  What I do not like about this sculpture is the wrinkles in the faces. It makes it less attractive. I also do not like the black lines on their eyes. It gives it a scary movie type look and I really dislike scary movies.
4.)  I would not buy this sculpture because it is scary. I am not a fan of scary things and would not like looking at it when I wake up in the middle of the night. Another reason why I would not buy it is because I am not a fan of the dark eyes. It is almost a depressing feeling.
5.)  It represents theatre. It portrays the old fashioned way actors would paint their face and use their hands to emphasize their emotions. It relates to the surrounding space because it is outside of theatre.
6.)  It does have strong frontal presentation. All the detail is in the front, there is really nothing going on in the back. The natural lighting brings out the detail on the faces like the wrinkles.
7.)  The sculpture is most rounded. It is detailed and the texture is rough. The sculpture is also concrete (real to life) representation.

  1. In reference to the sculpture Katrina, I have to disagree with you about the woman’s appearance. The woman’s ethnicity appears to be African which is the largest number of race within New Orleans and nearly the largest within Louisiana as a whole. Due to the large cultural history of Africans near the New Orleans area, I can see why the artist chose to mold the appearance characteristic to this ethnicity. That being said, the woman’s hair also appears to be a style characteristically related to her race and only becomes spiky due to the drastic wind of the hurricane. It shows the unruly nature of the storm. Also, I think that the missing pieces in the woman’s body further portray clues to her culture. The design on the woman’s left leg looks like a cross and another symbol which I am unfamiliar with is displayed on the woman’s arm. Despite my minor disagreements, I am in agreement that the way the umbrella moves with the wind gives it a realistic feel. This is a unique feature that I really like.

  2. I think you made a great decision on your art. I would havet to say you made a few errors on the Katrina statue in particular. But overall you have great pieces of work you decided to choose for your artwork.
